These consumer behaviors are here to stay. And so is this one\u2014 holiday shopping starting even earlier than in years past so consumers can avoid pandemic-related issues with out-of-stock items or long shipping windows.<\/p>\n<p>What else can retailers expect?<\/p>\n<p><strong>More online shopping<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/chainstoreage.com\/survey-e-commerce-set-soar-holidays\">Quantum Metric survey<\/a> on 2021 holiday shopping behaviors, 81% of respondents did more than half of their 2020 holiday shopping online and plan to purchase the <em>same amount, if not more<\/em>, of their gifts online during the upcoming holiday season.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chainstoreage.com\/survey-e-commerce-set-soar-holidays\">Two in three (62%) consumers<\/a> plan to spend more than they had before the pandemic due to being able to see family this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More consumer spending<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.digitalcommerce360.com\/Magazine\/August2021_DC360_StrategyInsights_HolidayPlanning.pdf?_hsmi=149170446&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--ckl3qu6laCC8NdcmqbvLNANgjdT0OTJoupON2C8L3VCmoqMMMOZVF-_Yy1WUmS-StDNlP5YeZKrXwMe1QlX8YJYjFhw\">58% of retailers<\/a> told Digital Commerce 360 that they expect consumers to spend more this holiday season as shoppers will be traveling and gathering more in 2021 compared with 2020.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rithum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Holiday-2021-300x147.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1203\" height=\"591\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-129789\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Retailers cite increasing costs (48.4%), fluctuating consumer confidence (40.6%) and timely delivery (40.6%) as the <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.digitalcommerce360.com\/Magazine\/August2021_DC360_StrategyInsights_HolidayPlanning.pdf?_hsmi=149170446&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--ckl3qu6laCC8NdcmqbvLNANgjdT0OTJoupON2C8L3VCmoqMMMOZVF-_Yy1WUmS-StDNlP5YeZKrXwMe1QlX8YJYjFhw\">top obstacles this holiday season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More convenience <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.digitalcommerce360.com\/Magazine\/August2021_DC360_StrategyInsights_HolidayPlanning.pdf?_hsmi=149170446&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--ckl3qu6laCC8NdcmqbvLNANgjdT0OTJoupON2C8L3VCmoqMMMOZVF-_Yy1WUmS-StDNlP5YeZKrXwMe1QlX8YJYjFhw\">51.6% of retailers<\/a> say BOPIS and\/or curbside pickup orders will continue to increase since consumers have become more comfortable with cross-channel ways to get what they need quickly and safely during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More choice, better shopping experiences for consumers <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.digitalcommerce360.com\/Magazine\/August2021_DC360_StrategyInsights_HolidayPlanning.pdf?_hsmi=149170446&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--ckl3qu6laCC8NdcmqbvLNANgjdT0OTJoupON2C8L3VCmoqMMMOZVF-_Yy1WUmS-StDNlP5YeZKrXwMe1QlX8YJYjFhw\">35.9% of retailers<\/a> will compete with Amazon and other top marketplaces by offering a unique or curated selection and expanded product categories. <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.digitalcommerce360.com\/Magazine\/August2021_DC360_StrategyInsights_HolidayPlanning.pdf?_hsmi=149170446&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--ckl3qu6laCC8NdcmqbvLNANgjdT0OTJoupON2C8L3VCmoqMMMOZVF-_Yy1WUmS-StDNlP5YeZKrXwMe1QlX8YJYjFhw\">43.8% of retailers<\/a> are investing in customer experience.
